Internet Resources/Links
As a teacher, I like to embed technology into the classroom without it becoming a distraction. I spend a great deal of time investigating programs, apps, and web pages to ensure that they meet the needs of my learners. The following web sites and apps are ones that I have found to be valuable for students.
Websites:
Scholastic News Online/Storyworks |
Students paid to receive this classroom magazine, and it includes digital access through the Internet, or through an apple or android app available through those stores. Students should be able to log-in using their Google information.
|
NoRedInk |
NoRedInk.com is a website that helps students learn about grammar by using their own interests and hobbies to create learning opportunities. We will be using this site quite a lot at the beginning of the year to practice grammar skills.
|
ReadWorks |
ReadWorks is a free online site with readings that link to our curriculum. Students may be assigned short reading passages to develop background knowledge about a subject. Students will be able to login using their Google login.
|
Flipgrid |
Flipgrid is an online video program that allows students to create short videos about a topic. I will occasionally use this to check for understanding.
|
Quizlet |
Quizlet is a great website for studying vocabulary. Students can practice their vocabulary in a variety of ways that are entertaining and effective. Most vocabulary words for Social Studies will be entered into this website in study sets.
|
Newsela |
Newsela is another website that students will be using in order to get background information about the topics we will be studying. This site provides reading passages at varied levels and even includes a read-to feature to support struggling readers.
|
Apps I recommend:
Many students today use tablets and phones to stay connected to friends and family. These same devices can help families stay connected to school, and help students in the classroom and at home.
Epic!
Epic is a great app for students who don't enjoy reading. The user interface is attractive, and many books have a read-to function. While the selection of books is not huge, students who use the app really like it. The app has added some great books recently and I recommend trying it if your child struggles with their daily reading.
|
Overdrive/Libby |
This app allows users to read e-books from the library. I LOVE this app. It has saved me thousands of dollars in Kindle buys. All you need is a library card!
|
Google App |
Having the Google app for your phone makes doing things in Google a breeze! This is especially true of presentations and uploading pictures (which CAN be a struggle sometimes since our district has a closed organization). Go to the Apple or Android stores for this!
