Grade 6 English Language Arts
This year White Brook Middle School is piloting a new English Language Arts program from Open Up Resources called Expeditionary Learning. This curriculum focuses on teaching ELA skills through relevant and engaging books. The three books that sixth grade will be using are:
We will begin the year with a short review unit on writing (grammar, sentences, and paragraphs) then move into our first module (group of units) centered around The Lightning Thief and Greek Mythology. We are excited to be able to use this exciting novel in our studies this year.

Grade 6 Social Studies
Social Studies curriculum in sixth grade focuses on World Geography and Ancient Civilizations. Our district has recently purchased the McGraw-Hill online text, World Geography and Ancient Civilizations I.
The focus for sixth grade is on HOW GEOGRAPHY influences the settlements of people throughout the world. All study will be done through the lens of geography.

- Social scientists: Students will learn about people who study societies like historians, geographers, archaeologists, anthropologists and more. Students learn about the tools they use to do their jobs, as well as about bias, primary & secondary sources, and how to conduct research
- Early humans. Students will learn about different types of hominids and how they adapted to their environments.
- The agricultural revolution: Students will learn about the change from nomadic culture to farming villages.
- Growth of Civilizations: Students will learn about how farming led to the growth of cities, and eventually to civilizations.
- North Africa, Ancient Egypt and Kush: Students learn about the societies in Ancient Egypt and Kush and how the geography of the area affected the development of these civilizations.
- Africa and Sub-Saharan African kingdoms: Students learn about the varied geography of Africa and the kingdoms that developed throughout the continent.
- The Americas: Students learn about the civilizations in the Americas before 1400.
